1. What is the purpose of the i3 Reading Recovery Follow-up study?
A prior study of the i3 scale-up of Reading Recovery produced rigorous evidence of large, positive impacts of the program on first grade students’ literacy. This follow-up research will examine whether and when students retained the literacy gains attributed to Reading Recovery through the third and fourth grades. We will also investigate if differences in literacy interventions since first grade help to explain differences in sustained impacts.
2. Who is funding this research?
The i3 Reading Recovery follow-up study is funded by the Institute of Education Sciences within the US Department of Education.
3. Is it safe and legal for me to release student data to the researchers?
Yes. All data are protected by industry standard encryption during data entry. The research protocols for IDEC and CRESP have been reviewed by their respective institutions and have been granted approval to collect data on students. FERPA law does allow for the collection of student data for the purposes of research, FERPA, 34 C.F.R. 99.31. If your school district requires a data sharing agreement a template can be provided to you. If your school district requires parental permission to release data and your school district does not keep records of permission forms from the time your students were either in RR or a part of the TNI study group, the IDEC HelpDesk can provide you with a sample parental permission form.
4. I know a Reading Recovery Teacher Leader/Teacher who did not receive information about participating in this study. Can I refer them to you for inclusion?
Unfortunately, no. The schools that have been contacted to participate in the study were selected by our research team based on specific criteria. The study is not open to additional schools at this time.
5. Am I the only person who can collect data for schools in my district?
No. Teacher Leaders, when completing the pre-survey, can decide if they would like to complete data collection (i.e., enter student test scores and complete the survey) for each school, or they can assign the school(s) to a Reading Recovery Teacher who might be more familiar with individual students’ experiences in that particular school.
6. Is the $75 gift card for my personal use, or will it be sent to my school?
The gift card (Amazon) is for your personal use as a token of appreciation for the time and effort you expended on behalf of this study. Upon completion of the data collection activities, the $75 gift card will be sent to the email address you provide.
7. I’m a Teacher Leader and I am assigning the survey/test score collection for each school in my district to a Reading Recovery Teacher. Will I still receive the $75 gift card?
No. The gift card will be sent to the individual who actually completes both the survey and the test score submission.
8. I’m a Teacher Leader/Teacher and am collecting data for more than one school. Will I receive only one $75 gift card?
No. You will receive a $75 Amazon gift card for each school for which you are able to successfully gather data.
9. I’ve completed the survey and entered student test scores—when will I receive my $75 gift card?
After we verify that the data (test and survey data) for each school has been submitted, your gift card will be processed. We will send gift cards at the end of each calendar month. If you have not received your gift card by the 10th of the month following completion of all data and survey tasks for a school, please contact us at cresp-rr@udel.edu.
10. When will the study’s results be available? How will I know what the ultimate findings are?
This is a multi-year project with several cohorts to be studied. The final research report and policy brief will be made available on our website in July 2020, with annual press releases sharing study progress in 2018, 2019, and early 2020.
11. Will results be disaggregated by district, school, or student type?
Possibly, but probably not. In order to produce results at these levels there needs to be a sufficient number of students in the sample. Depending on the amount of data collected through this study we may or may not be able to produce disaggregated results, but more than likely we will not.
12. Whom do I contact with questions?
If you are a Teacher Leader, feel free to contact the IDEC Help Desk at helpdesk@idecweb.us or e-mail the research team directly at cresp-rr@udel.edu. All other individuals, including information requests from the general public, can be directed to cresp-rr@udel.edu.
13. I am teacher leader entering 3rd and 4th grade test on IDEC’s website for a teacher that is no longer a part of Reading Recovery. I don’t see a SAVE Button. What do I do?
You’ll need to click the ACQUIRE button to take control of the student record. You should now see a SAVE button. Now you can enter the students data and save it.
14. Has the study’s survey recently changed? Is it shorter now?
Yes. Based on feedback from the survey administered to Cohort 1 teachers and teacher leaders, we shortened the survey. The survey no longer includes curriculum related questions and now focuses mostly on student interventions and progress monitoring after 1st grade.
15. Where can I find sample data sharing agreements or parental consent forms?
Just click here https://www.cresp.udel.edu/reading-recovery-sample-documents/.
16. Where can I find the survey questions prior to the launch of the survey?
You can find the survey questions here https://www.cresp.udel.edu/cohort-4-survey-questions/. Please review these survey questions early on so you know which questions you will need to collect data on.
